TECHNOLOGY

Tools of the trade

I recommend Microsoft technologies as most companies use the Office suite of applications to run their business. People are familiar with the look and feel of these products which helps with user adoption when developing and implementing applications.

Simple yet powerful tools and applications can be rapidly developed in Excel and Access using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) at no extra software or hardware cost. Businesses who have Microsoft SQL Server on-premises can take advantage of its extensive features to develop and implement sophisticated, scalable, company wide database solutions.

Additional capabilities are available through the MS SQL Server Business Intelligence Stack: Integration Services for systems integration and data warehousing, Analysis Services for custom data model development and analytics, and Reporting Services for custom report creation and publication. Businesses who have complex requirements without their own infrastructure can employ platform or software as a service to implement cloud-based solutions.

Businesses using Microsoft Office already have access to develop advanced analytical models, interactive reports, and dashboards in Excel using Power Pivot and DAX. For the latest in visualizations and analytics Power BI can be implemented for any budget.

Power BI Desktop is free for individual use, and if your business has MS SQL Server instances on-premises you may be eligible for a free Power BI Report Server license to enable company-wide on-premises report publication and sharing. Cloud-based Power BI report publication is available from Microsoft as a service for companies without their own infrastructure.
